Although she may not look it, Signal Hill turned 90 years old on April 14.
To commemorate the event, the city powers-that-be have some great events planned over the next few months for residents and non-residents alike. The first festivities took place this past Tuesday evening at the Signal Hill Community Center. For details on that event, see Ashley Fowler’s story and photos on pages 8 and 9. Also, for those of you with Internet access, check out our website (signaltribune.com) where you will soon find video that was shot that evening by Bill Pearl of lbreport.com. The same video coverage will be available at his website as well. If you don’t find the link right away, we may still be working on uploading it. Give us a call at (562) 595-7900, and we’ll let you know how to find it.
Those who have recently driven on Cherry Avenue between 19th and Spring streets have probably noticed the new eight-feet-tall, colorful banners affixed to the streetlight poles.
Sponsored by local businesses and individuals, the banners first appeared this past Tuesday and will remain in place through November of this year. All in all, there will be 120 banners bragging of the city’s nonagenarian status. In addition to being displayed on Cherry Avenue, the banners will also be hung on Willow Street beginning in the next 10 days or so. We are proud to have taken the lead on this project, with our design editor Leighanna Nierle as the creator/artist, and me, of course, as the salesperson. What a fun project!
Congratulations, Signal Hill! You don’t look a day over 85!
