26-year police veteran appointed as LBPD commander

Long Beach Police Chief Robert Luna this week selected Joel Cook for the position of police commander. Cook will be assigned to the Security Services Division.

A 26-year veteran, Cook began his career with the Long Beach Police Department in 1989. He was promoted to corporal in 1996, sergeant in 1999 and lieutenant in 2007.
Cook has worked a variety of assignments including: patrol, field training officer, crime analysis, vice investigations, special weapons and tactics, special enforcement, gang enforcement, homeland security, advanced officer training and special victims investigations. His most recent assignment has been as the lieutenant of the Event Planning/Disaster Preparedness Section.
Cook has a Bachelor of Science in criminal justice and a Master of Science in emergency management; both degrees were awarded from California State University, Long Beach. He is a graduate of the Sherman Block Supervisory Institute, Class 147.
