Justin Rudd’s nonprofit Community Action Team (CAT) and the 30-Minute Beach Cleanup will award one $200 check and up to five $100 checks to teachers on Saturday, Dec. 20, to be used in their classroom this holiday season. Funds will come from CAT’s recently completed Long Beach Turkey Trot 5K/10K.
The monthly “trash dash” typically gets many students and teachers at their 3rd-Saturday-of-the-month cleanups, and organizer Justin Rudd says this is just a simple way to thank our educators this holiday season. Average attendance at the cleanups is more than 200 people. All groups and individuals are welcome.
Checks will be presented to teachers, made payable to their school, at approximately 10:35am after Saturday’s cleanup. If more than five teachers and their students are registered by 10am, there will be a drawing to select the recipients of the five $100 checks.
To be eligible, teachers must simply sign in with at least three of their current students by 10am at 1 Granada Ave., in Belmont Shore, and the teacher and his/her students must participate in helping to pick up debris for the full 30 minutes. Signing-in late (by a student or teacher, for any reason) for this contest is not allowed, so participants should plan to arrive early or on time. Students can only sign in to represent one teacher for this contest. Students must be currently enrolled in at least one class with the teacher present. This offer is good for public, private and parochial classroom teachers and students of all ages in the Southern California area. The rules must be followed exactly to be eligible.
Parking is free. Bags and gloves will be provided, but those participating should bring a recycled bag. Student service learning credit forms/volunteer hours will be given.
In addition, the teacher who brings the most students (students must be current students), who have followed the rules above, will receive the $200 check. In the unlikely case of a tie for having the most students present, the check amount will be split. It is possible for a teacher to win a $100 check and the $200 check.
As always, all volunteers at the monthly 30-Minute Beach Cleanups who arrive by 10am will receive a raffle ticket for various prizes.
