LOVE A PARADE?
The Downtown Long Beach Associates (DLBA) will be sponsoring the Long Beach Latin-American Parade & Festival on Saturday, Sept. 12.
The one-day event will feature anything and everything Latin American, including authentic Latin-American cuisine, dance lessons and demonstrations, art exhibits, vendor booths and live music and performances on stage all evening long. The celebration will begin at 3pm with a parade down Pine Avenue beginning at 6th Street and leading to the intersection of Elm and 1st streets in the East Village Arts District, where the festival will continue into the night. The Long Beach chapter of the American Association of University Women will feature guest speaker Captain Catherine Zurn of the Orange County Sheriff’s Department at a luncheon meeting Saturday, Sept. 12 at Acapulco restaurant, 6270 E. PCH. Zurn will speak at 11am, and the luncheon will follow at noon. Zurn, who was selected as one of the “Ten Women of Power in O.C.” in 2006, will speak about breaking barriers for women in employment and management. Reservations required. Cost is $24. Long Beach Heritage will offer a Garden Seminar at the Bembridge House, 953 Park Circle, on Saturday, Sept. 12 at 1pm. The Gaslamp Restaurant & Bar, 6251 E. PCH, will host a “Step Out & Rock Out” night Wednesday, Sept. 16 to raise money for the American Diabetes Association. The Wrigley Association will host the first of its new monthly “Taste of Wrigley” event on Wednesday, Sept. 16. Each month a different Wrigley dining establishment will be selected for the community to come together for a bite to eat and share conversation among neighbors. EDUCATION INFORMATION
The Long Beach League of Women Voters will sponsor a panel discussion Saturday, Sept. 26 presenting the arguments for and against the LBUSD parcel tax measure on the November 3 ballot. Panelists will provide a balanced look at the measure, which calls for a temporary education parcel tax of $92 per year for five years to support a variety of education programs for the Long Beach Unified School District. GET YOUR MOTOR RUNNING
Los Altos United Methodist Church, 5950 E. Willow Street, will host its third vintage car show on Sunday, Oct. 4. Viewing time for the public will be from 9:30am to 2pm. The public can view a range of cars in the large church parking lot at the corner of Woodruff Avenue and Willow Street. Admission is free.
