Long Beach Councilmembers Dee Andrews and Roberto Uranga will host
a 6th and 7th District community budget summit at 6pm on Monday, Aug. 10
at Veterans Park, 101 E. 28th St.
With the 2016 city budget being released and the city council budget sessions
beginning next month, Andrews and Uranga are coordinating the event
to reach out to the community to inform and educate everyone on the process,
as well as seek the public’s input.
“This is the second year that we have been blessed with a surplus, but
we all know that with the rising CalPERS cost, we have to prepare for our
City’s future,” Andrews said. “With the input of our community and the
recommendations from City staff, we will be able to make the best possible
decision when it comes to passing the 2016 budget.”
As presented, the police, fire and emergency communications continue
to spend 69 percent of the General Fund, according to officials. The police
department is expected to get $2.2 million in one-time money again this year
to pay for overtime to fight violent crime.
“As an elected official, safety is our number-one priority,” Uranga said.
“I am looking forward to seeing more patrols on the street and the violent
crimes reduced. With this summit, I am excited about our communities input
and the suggestions on how we can continue to keep our neighborhoods
safe.”
The summit will include a presentation by the Office of the City Manager,
as well as representatives from the departments of Financial Management,
Fire, Police, Parks, Development Services, Public Works and Library.
