Sixth District Councilmember Dee Andrews (center) hosts his district’s new literacy program this week with the help of Jordan High School WRAP Omega Brothers.
Over 100 students from Lincoln’s after-school WRAP (Winners Reaching Amazing Potential) program gathered to be recipients of books.
“The best gift for our children is the gift of literacy,” Andrews said. “To read is to explore and to reach beyond any boundaries. Sometimes we take for granted the smallest things, like owning a book, when we have children in our city whose families can’t even afford one. It brings me great pleasure to be able to reach these children and to give them something that can expand their minds in a positive way.”
The 6th District Literacy Program was created with local Long Beach nonprofit New Life Beginnings, which has collected books throughout the year for the program. The Jordan High School WRAP Omega Brothers fraternity joined Andrews to deliver the books and provided inspirational quotes to the children. The program is free, and each child received a book of his or her choice.
