Gun violence continues to plague Long Beach. In 2023, there were at least 189 shootings, according to the Long Beach Police Department’s online police blotter.
In 108 of these shootings, someone was shot. At least 17 victims died from their gunshot wounds.
Across the nation, 18,854 people were shot to death in 2023, and another 36,338 were injured in shootings. These numbers include victims of malicious, willful and accidental shootings.
The City experienced two cases of murder-suicides using firearms late in the year; In October, an elderly man shot his wife before turning the gun on himself; In late December, a man fatally shot his 5-year-old child and then himself.
According to the Gun Violence Archive, there were 674 murder-suicides across the nation in 2023 in which the perpetrator used a firearm.
Multiple children were the victims of gun violence in Long Beach in 2023. In May, a gunman injured a 14-year-old girl and killed a 12-year-old boy. In July, a stray bullet entered a 14-year-old boy’s home and wounded him. During an argument on a public bus in September, a teenager allegedly fired a gun at another group of teens, striking a 14-year-old boy.
According to the Gun Violence Archive, 297 children were killed by gun violence in the United States last year, and another 641 were injured.
Since the start of the year four days ago, LBPD has responded to three separate shootings. Two resulted in no injuries, while in the other, a suspect or suspects shot a man multiple times, in the upper and lower body. The victim survived, but there is currently no identifying information available to the public about the suspect or suspects.
The Long Beach Police Department started its daily online police blotter in March 2022, so the Signal Tribune was unable to use it to find the number of shootings that occurred in previous years. The Signal Tribune submitted a public records request on Jan. 4 in order to learn the total number of shootings LBPD has responded to annually over the last 10 years, and is waiting to receive the relevant documents.
