The Youth Poet Laureate position comes with a $1,500 scholarship and arts programming in Long Beach.
The City of Long Beach invites its teenage poets to apply to become the city’s newest Youth Poet Laureate.
The Youth Poet Laureate Program was created to recognize young individuals gifted in poetry and spoken word, while encouraging community advocacy in the local area.
The Youth Poet Laureate will be awarded a $1,500 scholarship, accompanied by mentorship and resources. Additionally, four Poet Ambassador runners-up will each be awarded a $500 scholarship. The appointed Youth Poet Laureate and Poet Ambassadors will participate in literary arts programming between May 2024 and June 2025.
Open to all Long Beach youth between the ages of 13 and 18, the program encourages participation in Youth Poet Laureate (YPL) events and invites submissions for the chance to represent Long Beach through activism and art.
The announcement of the Youth Poet Laureate and Poet Ambassadors will take place in May 2024 at the program’s commencement ceremony. This event will mark the introduction of the city’s second YPL cohort, symbolizing a commitment to literacy, the arts, and advocacy.
