The Long Beach Public Library will celebrate Black history and culture throughout the entirety of Black History Month with several events observing the theme of “Our History, Our Future.”

“We are thrilled to present ‘Our History, Our Future,’ a celebration that aims to bring our community together to honor and appreciate the profound contributions of Black individuals throughout history,” said Director of Library Services Cathy De Leon in a statement from the City. “This event series reflects the inspiring diversity, unwavering resilience and boundless creativity within the Black community, fostering a deeper understanding and connection among us all.”

With the goal of showcasing Black love, art and identity within Long Beach, the events will begin Saturday, Feb. 3, with Black Excellence Professional Development Day at Billie Jean King Main Library from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

This networking-focused event will feature resume-building sessions and professional headshot opportunities geared toward Black professionals, as well as live music. This event is intended to empower Black candidates to pursue opportunities in their desired employment fields and build community connections.

The month-long festivities will include musical performances, special storytimes and much more. “Our History, Our Future” will culminate with the Black Voices Open Mic at Burnett Neighborhood Library on Saturday, Feb. 24, from noon to 3 p.m. Residents are invited to support local Black artists who will share their creativity, culture and experiences through an afternoon of poetry.

“I am honored to stand alongside the Long Beach Public Library once again for the inspiring ‘Our History, Our Future’ celebration, a series of events that exemplifies the strength, creativity and unity within our Black community,” said Mayor Rex Richardson in a statement from the City. “As we come together to share experiences, build connections and celebrate achievements, we are reminded of the richness of our shared history and the promise of our collective future.”
