Things to do in Long Beach: Queen Mary night market, Battle of the Bands, coffee shop trivia and more!

Say goodbye to May and hello to a myriad of community-centric, fulfilling ways to spend the first week of June. Things to do in Long Beach and Signal Hill this week include plenty of ways to get active and appreciate the pleasant weather such as yoga in the park Saturday morning, a day full of outdoor music at the Rec Park Bandshell and a sunset sound bath Monday evening. 

Residents can enjoy a relaxing evening indoors at a trivia night Monday night, a night market at the Queen Mary or an improvisational jazz performance Thursday. To kick the month off with new lessons and experiences, residents can attend a wetlands tour Saturday morning, a virtual public speaking seminar or a fair housing workshop Wednesday night.

Friday 5/31

Electrify Expo: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. This two-day expo at Rainbow Lagoon will center everything having to do with electric vehicles, from electric cars to electric skateboards. Attendees will be able to watch demonstrations of cutting-edge technology, and get to take some for a ride themselves. The event will also include entertainment and vendors. Tickets can be purchased for $20 on electrifyexpo.com.

Low-Cost Vaccine Clinic: 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The City of Signal Hill and the Community Animal Medicine Project will be providing vaccines and services to pets at discounted prices in the parking lot of the Signal Hill Public Library (1800 E Hill St.). Services include microchipping, tapeworm treatment, nail trimming, flea/tick treatment and more. For more information, call 562-989-7330. Prices will vary.

Spooky VR Experience: 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Residents can immerse themselves in the virtual reality of working a scary shift at Freddy Frazbear’s Pizzeria from the game “Five Nights at Freddy’s” at the Signal Hill Public Library (1800 E Hill St.). Free, but advanced registration is required by calling (562) 989-7323.

Saturday 6/1

Explore DeForest Wetlands: 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. This educational nature event will feature guided plant and wildlife tours, terracotta pot painting, seed ball making, guided poetry and art in nature sessions, informative talks about wetlands conservation and more at 6255 DeForest Ave. Free. 

Beach Clean Up: 10 a.m. to noon. The Surfrider Foundation is asking for volunteers to help clean litter off the beach around the Belmont Pier (2760 N. Studebaker Rd.). Volunteers are asked to bring their own bags, gloves, trash pickers, hat, sunscreen and water. Free. There will also be a pop-up sale by local business BYO Long Beach. Prices vary.

Historical Walking Tour: 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. The Signal Hill Historical Society will lead this walking tour through the city while going over local history. Comfortable shoes are recommended and water will be provided. Participants should meet at 1650 Crescent Heights St. at 10 a.m. Free. 

Yoga in the Park: 11 a.m. Rooted in Wellness Yoga Co. is offering this weekly yoga class to the community at Houghton Park (6301 Myrtle Ave.). The class is beginner friendly. Free.

Sunday 6/2

Ondo Dance Exhibit: 10 a.m. June Miyamoto Donovan of the Long Beach Japanese Cultural Center will be leading a performance of traditional ondo dancing at the Earl Burns Miller Japanese Garden (Earl Warren Dr.). Free.

LA Wine Fest: 1 p.m. Wine lovers over the age of 21 are invited to this festival at the Harry Bridges Memorial Park (1126 Queens Hwy.). The event will include unlimited wine tastings, food trucks, exhibitions, live music and more. General admission tickets can be purchased online at lawinefest.com for $80.

Carnival of the Animals: 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Long Beach Symphony and the RuMBA Foundation will host this event filled with music, dance, crafts and interactive activities at the Terrace Theater and Plaza (300 E Ocean Blvd.). Kids ages 17 and under are free, adult tickets are $20 and can be purchased online

High School Battle of the Bands: 4 p.m. Multiple local teen bands made of students from Poly, Jordan, Wilson and more will be competing with each other at the Rec Park Bandshell (701-939 Federation Dr.). Each band will perform three songs for the judges. Genres will range from pop, rock, jazz and more. Free.

Monday 6/3

Sunset Sound Bath: 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Erika A. Segura from The Sound-Bath Studio will lead this intention-setting meditation and sound healing session at the Signal Hill Library Terrace (1800 E Hill St.). Attendees should bring a yoga mat or blanket and are encouraged to call (562) 989-7323 to register. Free. 

Head Games Trivia Night: 7 p.m. Confidential Coffee (137 West Sixth St.) will be hosting this weekly trivia night. Competitors can form teams of up to six people and compete for prizes. Free.

Tuesday 6/4

Diversity Breakfast: 9 a.m. Residents are invited to this breakfast organized by the City’s Diversity Coalition Committee at Signal Hill Public Library (1800 E Hill St.). Free, but registration is required. To register, email alfalopez@cityofsignalhill.org by May 31. 

Spanish Story Time: 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Parents, caregivers and their children can enjoy stories told in Spanish, snacks and crafts at the Signal Hill Public Library (1800 E Hill St.). Free. 

Farmers Market: 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. This weekly farmers market at Bixby Park (130 Cherry Ave.) allows residents to purchase locally grown produce and other food, as well as handcrafted wares from vendors. Free to attend.

Wednesday 6/5

Toastmasters: 7 a.m. to 8 a.m. Residents are welcome to join this Zoom meeting for a supportive and positive environment to work on becoming a confident public speaker. This meeting takes place every first and third Wednesday and is hosted by the Shoreline Speakers Toastmasters. Email jgrobaty@gmail.com for more information and to receive a meeting link. Free. 

Author Talk: Noon to 1 p.m. Author and poet Katerina Jeng will be reading from and discussing her book “Gospel of a Whole Sun” at Intertrend Communications Inc. (228 East Broadway). Free.

Fair Housing Workshop: 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. This workshop by the Fair Housing Foundation at the Burnett Neighborhood Library (560 E. Hill St.) will teach the public about local property laws and renters rights. Topics of discussion will include housing discrimination, evictions processes, security deposits, rent increases and more. This workshop is appropriate for tenants, landlords, managers, property owners, attorneys, realtors and management companies. Free.

Thursday 6/6

Queen Mary Night Market: 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Various vendors will be selling their products. Food will be available for purchase while those 21 and older can enjoy a beer garden while enjoying live music. Free with reservation. To make a reservation, visit fairharbor.com.

Live Jazz: 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Those 21 years and older can enjoy a night of improvised jazz at The Wicked Wolf (2332 Pacific Ave.) from Hugh Von Kleist. Entry is free, but a drink purchase is highly recommended.
