The Long Beach Public Library (LBPL) and Dramatic Results are bringing back their SEED Creative City Lab for another summer, with six one-week sessions open to local middle schoolers.

This free summer camp will provide seventh and eighth graders with a five-day crash course in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) education.

Dramatic Results is a nonprofit educational arts agency based in Signal Hill that has worked with local students through community STEAM programs since 1992.

SEED is a five-year initiative led by Dramatic Results, and primarily funded by the U.S. Department of Education, that organizes programs for underrepresented students in an attempt to create a more equitable entry into the STEAM field.

“By partnering with local artists and organizations, we’re creating pathways to success and inspiring the leaders and innovators of tomorrow,” said Mayor Rex Richardson in a public statement from the City. “The SEED Creative City Lab embodies Long Beach’s spirit of creativity and inclusivity, offering middle school students a platform to explore their passions and unlock their potential.”

Students will learn skills under the tutelage of STEAM professionals as well as art and design elements from workers in areas of public safety, urban planning, sustainability and more.

Through field trips and team-building activities, such as visiting a local architecture film and learning creative tools on iPads, participants will enhance their skills and examine future career opportunities.

“We are dedicated to providing innovative educational opportunities that empower our youth and foster a lifelong love of learning,” said Library Director Cathy De Leon in a public statement from the City. “The SEED Creative City Lab represents a significant investment in the future of our community by equipping students with the skills and knowledge they need to succeed in an ever-changing world.”
