Things to do in Long Beach: outdoor movies, concerts, workshops and more!

The weather is heating up in Long Beach and Signal Hill, and residents can chill out at one of these evening outdoor events. 

For cinephiles looking to get out of the house and into the breeze, there will be outdoor movie screenings at dusk on Friday, Saturday, Monday and Tuesday. Music lovers can listen to local musicians perform live in various parks on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday. Animal lovers can meet potential foster pets on Sunday or take their own pets for a discounted check-up on Monday.

Friday 6/21

Flower Crowns for Marsha: 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. The Office of Climate Action and Sustainability invites teens and adults to make flower crowns at the Dana Neighborhood Library (3680 Atlantic Ave.) in honor of LGBTQ activist Marsha P. Johnson. Space and supplies will be limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis. Free.

Ride for Reentry: 6:30 p.m. This bike ride starting in Alamitos Beach (700 E Shoreline Dr.) hopes to increase support for previously incarcerated people as they reenter society. Members of organizations are encouraged to wear T-shirts showing their affiliations. Parking will cost $2 per hour. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own bikes, but bikes will also be available for rent for $13 from Wheel Fun Rentals. Free to attend.

Movie in the Park: 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. The public is invited to an outdoor screening of the animated movie “Wish” at Signal Hill Park (1780 E. HIll St.). The movie will begin at dusk. Attendees are encouraged to bring a lawn chair, blanket and picnic food. Free.

Saturday 6/22

Community Cleanup: 8 a.m. to noon. Volunteers are needed to help clean the Starr King neighborhood. Volunteers will meet at 20 E 67th Way. Trash bags, gloves and grabbers will be provided. Volunteers are asked to bring their own water. Free.

Family Theater Performance: 11 a.m. International City Theatre (330 E Seaside Way) will be hosting a performance of “Choosing My Way,” a collection of short stories from around the world. These performances are meant to help expose children of all ages to theater. Free.

Summer Cinema: Noon to 2 p.m. The public is invited to an outdoor screening of the animated movie “Finding Nemo” at Michelle Obama Neighborhood Library (5870 Atlantic Ave.). This event is appropriate for all ages. Free.

Arts Film Series: 12:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. The public is invited to watch two films about the life and work of Brian Wilson, founding member of The Beach Boys, at the Billie Jean King Main Library (200 W Broadway). The documentary “Brian Wilson: Long Promised Road” will play first, followed by the biographical drama “Love & Mercy.” Free.

Sunday 6/23

LBFD P.R.E.P Workout: 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. The Long Beach Fire Department invites anyone interested in becoming a firefighter to this workout that will prepare them for the Physical Abilities Test. The workout will be held at the Long Beach Fire Dept. Station 17 (2245 Argonne Ave.). Participants are asked to wear workout clothes and bring water. Clothing will get dirty during the workout. Food Giveaway: 9 a.m. to noon. Local nonprofit Friends of Puvungna will be distributing fresh produce to people in the G2 parking lot at Cal State Long Beach (1250 N Bellflower Blvd.). Bags will be available, but attendees are encouraged to bring their own. Free.

Foster the Fourth: 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Long Beach Animal Care Services (7700 E Spring St.) needs volunteers to foster lost and stray pets during and after Fourth of July, when the shelter is expected to fill up with pets that run away due to fireworks. Potential volunteers can meet pets in need of a foster home during the holiday. Before the Fourth of July weekend, volunteers must be willing to fill out an online application, ensure they are able to care for an animal for at least 30 days, keep foster pets separate from family pets, and regularly communicate with shelter staff. All food, supplies and medical care will be provided by the Long Beach Animal Care Services. Free.

Monday 6/24

Low-Cost Vaccine Clinic: 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Long Beach Animal Care Services (7700 E Spring St.) and Community Animal Medicine Project will be providing vaccines and services to pets at discounted prices. Services include microchipping, tapeworm treatment, nail trimming, flea/tick treatment and more. For more information, call 562-570-7387. Prices will vary.

Concert in the Park(ing) lot: 6:30 p.m. The public is invited to a live music performance by the Yari Moré Latin Band at the Bixby Joe Coffee & Tea parking lot (4245 Atlantic Ave.). The band will play a selection of upbeat salsa, merengue and cumbia songs. Attendees are encouraged to bring chairs, food and drinks. Free to attend.

Movie in the Park: 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. The public is invited to an outdoor screening of the 2023 live action film “The Little Mermaid” (2023) at Houghton Park (6301 Myrtle Ave.). Attendees are encouraged to bring a lawn chair, blanket and picnic food. The movie will begin at dusk. Free.

Tuesday 6/25

Concert in the Park: 6:30 p.m. The Long Beach Municipal Band will be performing a series of jazz, pop and patriotic songs at Whaley Park (5620 E Atherton St.). Attendees are encouraged to bring a lawn chair, blanket and picnic food. Free.

Zumba: 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. The Signal Hill Public Library (1800 E Hill St.) will be hosting this zumba class. Zumba is an activity that combines dancing and fitness, usually through uptempo music. Participants should wear comfortable shoes, bring a towel and a water bottle. Free.

Movie in the Park: 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. The public is invited to an outdoor screening of the animated musical comedy “Under the Boardwalk” (2023) at Coolidge Park (352 E Neece St.). The movie will begin at dusk. Free.

Wednesday 6/26

Summer Solstice Planting Workshop: 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. The Office of Climate Action and Sustainability will be teaching the public about flowers and planting during this workshop at the Dana Neighborhood Library (3680 Atlantic Ave.). Attendees will plant and take home their own sunflower seeds. Free

Thursday 6/27

Concert in the Park: 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. The Long Beach Municipal Band will be performing a series of jazz, pop and patriotic songs at Recreation Park (4900 E Seventh St.). Free.

Summer Concert: 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. The public is invited to listen to a lakeside concert by The Big City Hillbillies at the El Dorado Nature Center (7550 E Spring St.). Attendees are encouraged to bring food and low chairs. Free.
