Food, exhibits and film are taking the spotlight this week, offering artsy ways to get out of the house and beat the heat.

Ficklewood Ciderworks will be hosting a hot dog eating contest for the brave (and hungry), while residents can walk, talk and eat creative variations of the Filipino purple yam ube at Ube Fest Saturday. Get your artistic fill at the Downtown Long Beach Art Walk all day Saturday, at the Ranchos Los Cerritos cowboy exhibit opening Sunday or a summer-themed art workshop geared towards kids.

Families have a wide range of movies and concerts in the park throughout the week, as well as an indoor horror movie double feature, multiple story times and a flower-picking party.
