The Long Beach Shakespeare Company has announced its 13th annual free Shakespeare Festival, with The Merry Wives of Windsor kicking off the event.
In this comedic spin-off of The Bard’s own Henry IV, overweight knight Sir John Falstaff gets himself into some sticky situations when he tries to court two women at the same time, especially since they’re both already married! Hilarity ensues as the clever wives, the buffoonish town-folk, and the always-game Mistress Quickly set out to teach the hefty “hero” a lesson. A true ensemble show, The Merry Wives of Windsor is rich with comedy and music, disguises and surprises.
Food vendors, swashbuckling and a Renaissance musical troupe will also be part of the festival. Visitors are encouraged to wear their finest Renaissance costumes to celebrate the spirit of William Shakespeare.
The Festival’s home this year will be Bixby Park, located at the corner of 1st Street and Junipero Avenue, Saturdays and Sundays from July 9 to July 31. Pre-show festivities begin at 2pm, and performances begin at 5:30pm. Visit lbshakespeare.org.
