Long Beach residents are invited to celebrate a trailblazing American icon at the 37th annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Parade and Celebration on Jan. 18.

This annual observation of the legacy of civil rights activist Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. is organized by the City of Long Beach and the Office of Dr. Suely Saro, and will take place in Central Long Beach.

“Each year, we gather to honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., whose vision for a just and equitable society continues to inspire us all,” said Mayor Rex Richardson in a public statement. “We invite the community to join us once again as we remember and reflect on his ideals for peace, unity and justice. Dr. King’s dream is alive in each step we take.”

The family-friendly activities will include the parade beginning at 10 a.m. at Martin Luther King, Jr. Avenue and Anaheim Street, followed by a park celebration from noon to 5 p.m. at Martin Luther King Jr. Park, located at 1950 Lemon Ave. The celebration will include onstage live entertainment, a kid zone and a variety of food and merchandise vendors.

“It is an honor to welcome the community once again to this year’s celebration, where we commemorate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.,” said Councilmember Saro in a public statement. “As we come together, we embody his values of compassion, equity and unity and commit ourselves to an inspiring and bright future for all.”

Local community groups, businesses and nonprofit organizations can submit a parade application through Dec. 30 to be a part of the festivities. Parade participants are invited to use quotes, photos, banners or flags that showcase the legacy of Dr. King in their parade entries.

The City is also looking for volunteers to help staff the parade and park celebration. Volunteers must be 18 years old or older, with duties including staffing the information booth, collecting trash and helping with setting up and cleaning up after the festivities.

Residents, businesses, nonprofits and community groups who are looking to volunteer at the event can register and learn more online.
