While the Long Beach City Council welcomed in its newly elected and re-elected members, longtime seventh district representative Roberto Uranga ushered in a new chapter in his career.
After 12 years on the city council, Uranga’s peers unanimously elected him to be the city’s vice mayor for the next two years.
The Long Beach City Council elects its own vice mayor every two years by nominating a member of the council. Once a councilmember is nominated, the action must be seconded by another councilmember, then everyone takes a vote of “Yes” or “No.”
Former Vice Mayor Cindy Allen nominated Uranga, and Councilmember Megan Kerr seconded the motion. No other nominations were made, and Uranga’s nomination was supported by the council unanimously. Councilmember Daryl Supernaw was not present for the meeting.
Uranga thanked his colleagues for their trust and addressed his staff members, saying, “We have a greater purpose now in the city to serve all of Long Beach, which is what I intend to do. And with the help of my colleagues I will definitely do that. It has been a great honor these past 12 years to serve as the councilmember of the seventh district.”
The night began with second district representative Allen and sixth district representative Suely Saro commencing their swear-in ceremonies. Allen, Saro and fourth district representative Daryl Supernaw were all re-elected to their positions in November.
Newly-elected eighth district representative Tunua Thrash-Ntuk was also welcomed onto the city council and gave a speech thanking her family, saying she wants to create a thriving community in the eighth district.
