The members of the Long Beach Computer Club are spending the holidays collecting films to send to the troops as a part of “Operation DVD,” a charity that takes donated DVDs overseas for U.S. service men and women in Iraq and Afghanistan. The club asks that the public help them to bring in new or used family-appropriate DVDs to their monthly meetings in November and December.
The concept was created as a form of “safe entertainment” for troops who are in an environment too dangerous to even play softball. Over 100,000 specially designed collection boxes have been set up nationwide at schools, stores, churches and restaurants.
Once filled, the boxes are sorted and sent to service men and women’s families stateside as well as overseas through the Family Readiness Group of the National Guard.
While the focus of Operation DVD is directed towards those in Iraq and Afghanistan, DVDs are also being sent to Kuwait for deployed troops and to wounded soldiers receiving treatment in military and veterans hospitals worldwide.
The next meeting of the Long Beach Computer Club, which meets the second Thursday of the month from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., will take place tonight, Nov. 11. at the Signal Hill Community Center, located at 1780 East Hill Street in Signal Hill.
As an added incentive, for each DVD donated, participants will receive one entry into a drawing that will take place Dec. 13.
