Teachers and staff can select their preferences for relocation, but it isn’t guaranteed.

The Long Beach Unified School District and Teachers Association of Long Beach approved a memorandum of understanding on the next steps for teachers affected by the closure of Hudson Elementary School.

The board approved the closure plan for Hudson Elementary in November 2024 after the district’s facilities team presented research on the school’s dwindling enrollment numbers and capacity usage

While most students will be transferred about half a mile down the street to Garfield Elementary School and special education students will be transferred to Bixby Elementary School, all impacted Hudson certificated teaching and support staff will receive new placements across the district.

Fifteen full-time certificated employees and 10 full-time classified employees will be reassigned for the 2025-2026 school year, according to a Long Beach Unified spokesperson.

The district will schedule individual meetings with certified staff to determine their school preference and wrote that it will take these into account when determining new placements. However, the memorandum noted that it can’t guarantee that new placements will align with staff’s preferences.

The new assignments for certified teaching staff, including teachers, teacher librarians and intensive individualized coaches, will be determined by the Elementary Transfer Committee — a group of selected district and TALB representatives in charge of reviewing and approving elementary school teacher transfer requests.

The Head Counselor for Elementary Schools and the Lead Psychologists for the District will determine new assignments for the displaced Hudson certificated support staff, including counselors and psychologists.

The memorandum mentioned that new placements will be determined before other district teachers who are being displaced or are applying for voluntary transfers. Affected Hudson elementary teachers will not displace teachers at other sites regardless of seniority, the memorandum notes.

All impacted staff will receive eight hours of paid additional hourly time to prepare for the move.
