Legacy & Unity event to celebrate Black-owned business and local history in Downtown Long Beach

Community members of all ages are invited to Legacy & Unity: Black Celebration on The Promenade, a free bash of Black history, culture and community in Downtown Long Beach. 

Taking place Saturday, Feb. 8, this event is put on by Long Beach-based nonprofit Dreamz Into Goals (DIG LIFE) and the Office of Councilmember Mary Zendejas. 

The festival will include live entertainment, family-friendly activities, wellness resources and cultural exhibits. There will also be a vendor marketplace with local Black-owned businesses selling food, art, fashion and handmade items. A Culinary Corner will highlight African American cuisine. 

Attendees can dive into the history of Long Beach’s Black pioneers, like civil rights activists Ernest and Lillian McBride. On the heritage wall, African American societal contributions displayed proudly, alongside cultural exhibits and live mural painting. 

On the main stage there will be live music, spoken word poetry, cultural dance performances and an open mic hour that will focus on storytelling. 

Children and their families can enjoy scavenger hunts, art workshops and a storytelling corner featuring Black authors. In addition, the festival will have a significant focus on community wellness, with free health screenings, fitness sessions and a range of mental health support resources. 

Legacy & Unity: Black Celebration on The Promenade will take place Saturday, Feb. 8 from noon to 4 p.m. at Mosaic (290 E Fourth St.). Those interested in attending can RSVP on Eventbrite.
