Long Beach and Signal Hill offer plenty of ways to connect with the community, learn new skills or chill out with live entertainment throughout the week.
A wide range of workshops this week promise new skills, like a beginner-friendly nature photo walk at Willow Springs Park, a community garden workshop at the Signal Hill Community Garden, a women’s wellness session at the Signal Hill Public Library or a clothes mending gathering, all on Saturday. More opportunities include a crochet club Wednesday, a laser engraving workshop and an English speaking practice club Thursday.
Films and media are in the spotlight as well, with a critically acclaimed documentary screening about Black cowboys in LA and their fight to preserve their culture on Saturday, a music video premiere and film screenings at Place LB Sunday, and a movie trivia night at Long Beach’s independent theater Thursday night.
Entertainment options this week include an R&B brunch party at Sevilla Nightclub Sunday, poetry club Monday night at Recreational Coffee, stand-up comedy at Que Sera Wednesday night and live jazz from the Jazz Angels on Thursday.

Friday 3/21
Youth Art Workshop: 3 p.m. The Long Beach Museum of Art is hosting a hands-on art workshop for kids at Burnett Neighborhood Library (560 E. Hill St.) in honor of Women’s History Month. Free.
Crochet Club: 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. The public is invited to the Signal Hill Public Library (1800 E Hill St.) to crochet together for an hour. This event is appropriate for all skill levels. For more information, call (562) 989-7323. Free.
Grief Sound Bath: 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Cosmic Return and Adelitas Revenge is hosting this sound bath and collective space for people to share and release grief of any kind at 4007 E. Fourth St. There is a suggested donation of $11, but no one will be turned away due to lack of funds.

Saturday 3/22
Zaferia Heights Neighborhood Clean-Up: 8 a.m. to noon. Join the Zaferia Heights Neighborhood Association as they help clean litter in the neighborhood. Volunteers will meet at 1435 Orizaba Ave. Free.
Ship Open House & Tours: 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Step aboard the historic Western Flyer, the vessel that carried John Steinbeck and Ed Ricketts on their 1940 expedition to the Sea of Cortez. Celebrate the ship’s return with public tours from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at Rainbow Harbor (Dock 4 near the Aquarium of the Pacific) and from 1:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at Alamitos Bay (public long dock at the end of Appian Way). Free.
Photo Walk: 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Willow Springs Park (2745 Orange Ave.) is hosting an hour-long guided walk and nature photography experience. This walk is beginner-friendly, as tips will be shared throughout the walk. Residents can also learn about how water is connected to the history of the park. Free.
Los Cerritos Wetland Meeting: 10 a.m. to noon. The public is invited to submit their ideas on the Southern Los Cerritos Wetlands Restoration Project, which will provide public access to the part of the land that is its first major restoration project. The meeting will take place on the State Land Parcel portion of the land, and residents should turn east on First Street from Pacific Coast Highway. Free.
Gardening Workshop: 10 a.m. to noon. Help build community garden beds and learn spring planting tips through the Signal Hill Gardening Program at the Community Garden (1917 E. 21st St.). Free.
Women’s Wellness Workshop: 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Learn about the power of plants and medicinal herbs, and how to use them throughout your moon cycle at this workshop hosted by Ollie George Cigliano at the Signal Hill Public Library (1800 E. Hill St.). Free, but registration is required by calling 562-989-7323.
Youth Art Workshop: Noon to 2 p.m. Local nonprofit A Future Superhero and Friends, Cora’s Crafts, Tichenor Clinic for Children and the Port of Long Beach is hosting this art healing workshop for kids. Children will be able to paint, color and draw, and will leave with their own art supplies to continue their journey. The location of the workshop will be shared with parents who message @afuturesuperhero on Instagram. Free.
Clothing Swap and Mending Cafe: 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Residents can give their clothing new life at this mending cafe, or receive free clothes by participating in a swap at the McBride Park Community Center (1550 Martin Luther King, Jr. Ave.). This event is hosted by Radical Clothes Swap and Radical Sewist, and registered attendees can bring up to 10 clean clothing items in good condition to swap, or one item that needs repairing. Documentary Screening: 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Residents can enjoy an outdoor screening of “Fire on the Hill: The Cowboys of South Central LA,” a critically acclaimed documentary about the history of Black cowboys in South and Central LA, the mysterious fire that burned their inner-city horse stable and their fight to preserve their culture. The film will be followed by a Q&A with director Brett Fallentine and the film’s lead Ghuan Featherstone at Ranchos Los Cerritos (4600 Virginia Road.). Bring blankets and chairs to sit in. Sunday 3/23
R&B with Love Brunch Party: 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Enjoy a day of R&B classics at Sevilla Nightclub (140 Pine Ave.), featuring 90s and 2000s throwbacks and live DJ sets. Tickets can be purchased on Eventbrite starting at $23.18.
World Poetry Day: 1 p.m. Celebrate World Poetry Day with a special poetry reading at the Museum of Latin American Art (628 Alamitos Ave.) in collaboration with El Martillo Press. Featured creatives include Matt Sedillo, Alyesha Wise Hernandez, Matthew ‘Cuban’ Hernandez, Sonia Guttierez, and Felicia ‘Fe’ Montes. Free.
LBCMA Film Club: 1:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. The Long Beach premiere of the “Yudith” music video by Velvet Penny will kick off this installation of the Long Beach Community Media Arts Film Club. The video shows the nonlinear path of healing and the pathways of self destruction that present themselves on the path to realization. More films will be shown following the video at Place LB (2172 Pacific Ave.). Free, but donations are welcome.

Monday 3/24
Low-Cost Vaccine Clinic: 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Long Beach Animal Care Services (7700 E Spring St.) and Community Animal Medicine Project will be providing vaccines and services to pets at discounted prices. Services include microchipping, tapeworm treatment, nail trimming, flea/tick treatment and more. All dogs must be on a leash, and all cats should be in a carrier. Printmaking Mondays: 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Every Monday, Place LB (2172 Pacific Ave.) invites the public to learn how to make their own lino prints. Materials will be provided. A donation of $1 to $8 is suggested, but no one will be turned away because they can’t pay.
No Pulp Poetry Club: 7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Local poets are invited to share their work during this open mic night at Recreational Coffee (237 Long Beach Blvd., Suite A). Free admission.

Coffee with a Cop: 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. The public is invited to meet and have coffee with their local police officers from the North Division at Starbucks (5353 Atlantic Ave.). Free to attend.
Teen Café: 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. Teens are invited to talk, craft and snack together at Mark Twain Neighborhood Library (1401 E. Anaheim St.). Free.
Bembridge House Cocktail Mixer & Anniversary: 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Celebrate 25 years of the Historic Bembridge House (953 North Park Circle Drive) being under the care of Long Beach Heritage with a night of cocktails and art. Tickets are $23.18 and can be purchased on Eventbrite.

Wednesday 3/26
Community Health Event: 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. The public is invited to this free event aimed at helping people access health and care services such as medical, Medicare, Covered California enrollment, IRS penalty assistance and more. This event is open to everyone, regardless of immigration status and will take place at 6853 Atlantic Ave. #110. Free.
Weekly Crochet: 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. The public is invited to learn and practice crochet at the Bach Neighborhood Library (4055 N Bellflower Blvd.). All skill levels are welcome. Free.
Fiber Club: 4:30 p.m. to 5:45 p.m. Teens and young adults are invited to a crafting meetup at the Billie Jean King Main Library (200 W. Broadway). Attendees can work on their knitting, crocheting or other fiber arts projects. Materials such as yarn, crochet hooks and knitting needles will be provided, but participants are welcome to bring their own supplies. This event is appropriate for those 13 and older. Bear City Comedy: 8 p.m. A roster of stand-up comedians perform weekly at Que Sera (1923 E Seventh St.). This event is for those 21 and older. Doors open at 7 p.m. Free.

Thursday 3/27
Diaper Distribution: 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Local nonprofit Centro CHA will be distributing diapers to families that need them at Cesar Chavez Park (401 Golden Ave.). The diapers are intended for babies under 2 years old that live in Long Beach. Families will need to verify that they are low income, either by providing proof of benefits such as Medi-Cal, CalFresh, etc. No registration is required. For more information, call (562) 505-5552. Laser Engraving Workshop: 4 p.m. Learn the art of laser cutting while crafting a custom wooden tissue box cover at Billie Jean King Main Library (200 W. Broadway). Participants will design and decorate their own box using acrylic paint. Supplies are provided on a first-come, first-served basis. Free.
English Conversation Club: 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. English language learners are invited to practice English conversations together at the Burnett Neighborhood Library (560 E. Hill St.). This is an informal gathering and a safe space for anyone trying to learn English. Free.
Thursday Night Market: 5 p.m. Discover local vendors, live music and delicious food at the weekly Thursday Night Market at the Promenade in Downtown Long Beach (210 E. Third St.). This pop-up market is a great way to explore unique artisan goods while enjoying the lively atmosphere of Downtown Long Beach. It’s the perfect spot for an evening of browsing, eating and supporting small businesses in the area. Free.
Youth Jazz Concert: 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Celebrate Youth Art Month in Signal Hill by enjoying a performance from one of the City’s nonprofits, Jazz Angels. Talented youth musicians will play an array of songs at the Signal Hill Public Library’s Zinnia Courtyard (1800 E. Hill St.). Free.
Movie Trivia: 7 p.m. The Art Theatre of Long Beach (2025 E. Fourth St.) is hosting a monthly trivia night for film enthusiasts to test their movie knowledge with five rounds of 10 questions, and surprises along the way. Gather a team of up to 10 people or play solo. No phones allowed during the trivia. Winners and runner-ups will receive free tickets to upcoming films, exclusive posters and other prizes.
