Long Beach residents will have the chance to enjoy music, movement and tradition during DanceFest, a free cultural showcase on Aug. 16 at the Cesar E. Chavez Park Amphitheater.
Hosted by the City’s Department of Parks, Recreation and Marine through the Homeland Cultural Center, the event will feature performances by local artists and community groups who practice a wide range of traditional and urban arts. Audiences will watch dances from Aztec and West African cultures, Khmer martial arts, Micronesian arts, breakdancing, drumming, poetry and more.
“DanceFest brings people together to enjoy a beautiful summer evening and honor the cultural traditions of our diverse community,” said Mayor Rex Richardson in a public statement. “Art, music and dance are part of the cultural heartbeat of Long Beach, and we encourage residents to join us as we celebrate these talented performers.”
Attendees are encouraged to bring blankets, chairs and picnic dinners to enjoy as they watch the performances.
The Homeland Cultural Center, located in MacArthur Park, offers free programs all year long that give community members a chance to learn and share cultural traditions. In addition to classes in dance and music, the center regularly hosts poetry readings, theatrical performances, art shows and cultural celebrations.
DanceFest is part of Long Beach’s “Summer of Opportunity” initiative, a citywide effort to create safe, engaging spaces for young people during the summer. The initiative supports youth development and aims to reduce violence through access to activities and resources.
