The Long Beach Police Department (LBPD) will hold a driving under the influence (DUI) and driver license (DL) checkpoint Thursday, Aug. 21 from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m. in the east side of the city.

Drivers charged with a first-time DUI face an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, as well as a suspended license. Impaired driving can sometimes be caused by certain prescription medications. Driving under the influence of marijuana is illegal as well.

LBPD chooses checkpoint locations based on data of impaired driving-related crashes, according to the City.

Funding for this program was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
