Sixth District Councilmember Dee Andrews and the Long Beach Department of Parks, Recreation & Marine have announced that the 24th annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Peace & Unity Parade and Celebration will take place Saturday, Jan. 14, 2012.
The Martin Luther King, Jr. Parade and Celebration commemorate the courage, humility, and ultimate sacrifice of the historic civil rights activist. The parade honors King’s life and dedication to service by showcasing schools, organizations and community groups that strive to keep his timeless values alive.
“This parade and celebration is the highlight of our city,” Andrews said. “For years it has renewed our communities with its visions of peace and brotherhood.”
Following the parade is the celebration that offers a free afternoon of music featuring the works of artists whose visions coincide with King’s voice for justice, peace and civil rights. The celebration will feature Dreamland, an entire area dedicated to youth to teach them about King and his legacy. Last year, the event attracted more than 20,000 attendees, according to Andrews’s office.
Currently, applications are being accepted for promotional and sponsorship packages, parade participates, vendors, performers, and volunteers. For more information call (562) 570-6816 or visit longbeach.gov/district6.
