Alphonse Nagourney, 95, died Nov. 21, 2011 in Long Beach.
A resident of Trumbull, Connecticut, he is survived by: wife, Margaret; children, Brian Nagourney of Shanghai, China; Sarah Nagourney of New York City; Dr. Robert Nagourney of Long Beach; and grandchildren, Alexander, Adam and Natalie.
Born in Brooklyn, New York, July 19, 1916, the youngest of six, his father was a prominent New York physician. With a degree from the Brooklyn College of Pharmacy, he pursued interests that included developing a line of women’s perfume.
His accomplishments include introduction of the topical germicide Betadine, development of the Apgar-Score Timer in perinatology and the introduction of community-based cardiac resuscitation, as founder of Connecticut-based Resuscitation Laboratories.
With business interests from Russia and China to Brazil, he spoke several languages including German and Spanish. He continued to pursue entrepreneurial business ideas well into his 80s. Memorial services will be Sunday, Dec. 11, at 1pm at Bixby Knolls Towers, 3737 Atlantic Ave.
