Seventh District Councilmember James Johnson will host We Harte B.A.R.K., a new monthly event at Bret Harte Library, on Saturday, Jan. 28 from 11am to 12:30pm.
Johnson has partnered with B.A.R.K. (Beach Animals Reading with Kids) to encourage children to read by providing them with the opportunity to read aloud to friendly and attentive dogs. Founded in 2007, B.A.R.K. is a volunteer program that encourages children to increase their reading skills and self-confidence by reading aloud to certified therapy dogs. Students often find it intimidating to read in front of classmates; with the help of B.A.R.K., children increase their reading skills, self-confidence, and class participation.
We Harte B.A.R.K. will be held the fourth Saturday of each month at Bret Harte Library, 1595 W. Willow St.Children of all ages are welcome. B.A.R.K. will bring their own trained, certified dogs. Attendees are asked to not bring their own dogs to the event.
