Things to do in Long Beach: Oscar’s party, spring kick-off celebrations, art swap and more!

Kick off the weekend on Friday night at a free community gathering at the Hangar or an adults-only night at the Aquarium of the Pacific. Cinephiles can enjoy a screening of “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” at Brewitt Neighborhood Library Saturday afternoon or a night of movie trivia at the Art Theater Wednesday. Art lovers can swap supplies while looking at an exhibit or visit a museum after hours.

Friday 3/13

LBX Nights: 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. The public is invited to enjoy a night of live music, food, and entertainment at The Hangar at LBX (4150 McGowen St, Long Beach, CA 90808). The event will feature local vendors, a live DJ spinning 80s and 90s hits, caricatures, face painting, permanent jewelry and more. Free to attend.

Night Dive: 7:30 p.m. to 11 p.m. Adults ages 18 and older are invited to enjoy an evening of music, art and entertainment during this event at the Aquarium of the Pacific (100 Aquarium Way). This Hollywood-themed gathering will feature live music, DJs, a red carpet photo experience and food and drinks available for purchase. Tickets are $49.95 on the aquarium’s website.

Saturday 3/14

Monarch Day of Action: 9 a.m. to noon. Families and individuals are invited to help support Monarch butterfly habitat restoration at Willow Springs Park (2745 Orange Ave.). Participants will plant Narrowleaf Milkweed and other pollinator-friendly native plants, enjoy music and arts and crafts, and connect with local environmental organizations. Free.

Community Pilates: 9:30 a.m. Join Diosa Collective every Saturday for a free community pilates class at 4421 E. Village Road. All levels are welcome, but space is limited so RSVP at the link in the bio of @diosacollectivelb. Free.

Film Workshop: Noon to 3 p.m. Long Beach Community Media Arts is hosting this Intro to 16mm Cameraless Animation workshop at PLACE (2172 Pacific Ave.). Workshop fee is $20 at linktr.ee/lbcma.

Super Saturday Movie Matinee: 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. Residents and families are invited to enjoy a screening of “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” at Brewitt Neighborhood Library (4036 E. Anaheim St.). Free.

Free Food: 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Receive a box of free, nutritious food from Friends of Puvungna at the CSULB Parking Lot G2 (1250 Bellflower Blvd.). Free.

Flutter into Spring: 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. The public is invited to create colorful butterfly wings using cardboard and art supplies at Michelle Obama Neighborhood Library (5870 Atlantic Ave.). This hands-on craft program welcomes participants of all ages and celebrates the arrival of spring. Free.

Sunday 3/15

Adler Paddler: 7:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The public is invited to a paddle race at the U.S. Sailing Center in Alamitos Bay (5489 E. Ocean Blvd.) held in memory of local racer Steve Adler. The event raises awareness about genetic health conditions and will include a raffle and T-shirt sales benefiting the John Ritter Foundation. Free to participate. 

Art Swap: 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The public is invited to bring and exchange art and craft supplies while enjoying an art exhibit at the Brown Owl Café (346 N Ford Blvd.). Suggested items to swap include markers, crayons, colored pencils, stamps, ink pads, calligraphy pens, yarn, embroidery needles, art prints, X-acto blades, tracing paper, fabric, sewing kits, Mod Podge, stickers, felt, zines, DIY books, jewelry-making tools, beads, buttons, canvases, clay, rulers, brushes, construction paper, origami paper, paints, sponges, glitter, glue, and craft organizers. Free admission.

Bad Bunny Book and Conversation: 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. The Museum of Latin American Art (628 Alamitos Ave.) will host scholars Vanessa Diaz and Petra Rivera-Rideau as they present their book “P FKN R: How Bad Bunny Became the Global Voice of the Puerto Rican Resistance.” Free.

Almost St. Patrick’s Day: 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Bixby Knolls is celebrating St. Patrick’s Day early with a beer route than visitors can customize to explore local breweries, restaurants and wine bars within walking distance. There will be a free shuttle taking visitors to various participating locations featuring live music and deals and people are encouraged to dress festively to unlock specials along the way. Red Carpet Awards Gala: 2:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. The public is invited to watch the Academy Awards on the big screen during a fundraising gala at the Art Theatre (2025 E. 4th St.). The event will feature a red carpet photo booth, specialty food and drinks, a silent auction, prizes and a best-dressed contest. Proceeds support the historic theater’s programming and operations. Tickets can be purchased for $50 on the theater’s website.

Monday 3/16

BB & Me Tea: 10 a.m. to noon. Babies and toddlers between 1 to 4 years old and their caregivers are invited to this casual play date at Green Wisdom Classroom (702 Cedar Ave.), where they can enjoy nature-based play, music, storytelling and more. Attendees should bring their own mugs. There is a suggested donation of $10 to $15. 

Courtyard Storytime: 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Families with young children are invited to an outdoor storytime at Michelle Obama Neighborhood Library (5870 Atlantic Ave.). The event will feature stories, songs and a reading by guest author Gabriel Gaete, followed by a children’s art activity. Copies of his book will be available for purchase. Free to attend.

Westside Silver Series: 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Seniors and their caregivers are invited to attend a workshop on banking basics presented by the Westside Community Alliance at Harte Neighborhood Library (1595 W. Willow St.). Spanish and Tagalog translation will be available. Free.

Community Voices Focus Group: 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Community members are invited to share their perspectives on local needs and help shape future programs and resources during a focus group at The Guidance Center (1301 Pine Ave.). Wednesday 3/18

Navigating the City’s Hiring Process Workshop: 8:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. Job seekers are invited to learn about employment opportunities with the City of Long Beach during this workshop at the LBWIN Adult Career Services Center (4811 Airport Plaza Drive, Ste. 120). Staff will explain the City’s hiring process, how to receive job notifications and tips for applying. An optional computer lab session will follow from 10 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Register on the City’s online event calendar. Free.

Movie Trivia Night: 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Film fans are invited to test their movie knowledge during a trivia night at the Art Theatre of Long Beach (2025 E. 4th St.). Participants can play solo or form teams of up to 10 people for five rounds of film-related questions. Winners will receive prizes such as free movie tickets, posters and other surprises. Free.

Thursday 3/19

Doing Business with the City Webinar: 11 a.m. to noon. Business owners and entrepreneurs are invited to learn how to work with the City of Long Beach during this virtual webinar. City staff will explain the contracting process, the types of goods and services the City purchases and how to register on the City’s online procurement platform. Community Night at the Museum: 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. The public is invited to visit the Kleefeld Contemporary Art Museum (1250 Bellflower Blvd.) after hours to explore current exhibitions and participate in a self-guided art activity. The event also features “Loud Hour” from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m., when visitors can make noise in the galleries with provided instruments. Free.
