There is scant change in the air this election season as incumbent candidates hold strong in the June 2 primary election. From mayor and city auditor to city council and school board members, residents may see the same faces representing them for another four years.
A candidate only needs more than 50% of the votes in their race to win outright and avoid a general election in November. Long Beach’s District 5 councilmember seat is the only race as of now that’s close between the two candidates Megan Kerr and Tara Riggi.
Votes are still being counted, with the Associated Press estimating 62% of the votes for the Long Beach mayoral race have been tallied. It will be weeks before every vote is counted. However, for some races with results already highly skewed in one direction, that may not matter.
As of June 3, the Los Angeles County Registrar estimates 23% of LA County residents voted in the election.
