In this age of digital perfection, the Holga and Diana plastic cameras, made in China and sold as toys, have developed a cult following among photographers who love them for their simplicity and imperfections. An upcoming exhibition and competition in Long Beach will bring toy-camera enthusiasts together to show off the medium’s artistry.
Plasticity, a plastic lens photo contest, will be on view at Jones Studio Gallery, 4321 Atlantic Ave. at the Expo Arts Center in the Bixby Knolls section of Long Beach, from Friday, April 20 to Saturday, May 5. The official opening night will be Saturday, April 28.

The show starts as a viewer-interactive competition. All photographers, both amateur and professional, are invited to enter their film or digital plastic-lens work in a number of categories. Gallery patrons then vote on their favorite film and digital photo. The category from each format with the most popular votes within it will go into a juried competition.
Photographers may enter any size, unframed photo, with the understanding that it will be pinned up on the wall. Awards will be announced Saturday, May 5.
“This is not just a photo contest,” says organizer Nate Lubben, himself a toy-camera enthusiast. “It’s an opportunity for the public to be fully engaged in the art medium of photography and for newer artists to gain an art gallery experience and all that it entails.”
Deadline for submitting work is Saturday, April 14.
