In partnership with the Arts Council for Long Beach, the Port of Long Beach is launching the Port Arts Program, a free summer arts education initiative.

The new program focuses on providing local fifth grade students with an opportunity to explore one of the nation’s busiest seaports through art.

“The Port Art Program gives students an opportunity to see our operations up close and imagine what the Port of the Future might look like,” Port of Long Beach Chief Executive Officer Dr. Noel Hacegaba said in a public statement. “By combining learning with creativity, we’re helping students gain a better understanding of the Port’s role in our community.”

Students will participate in a special harbor boat tour to learn about the Port’s operations and history, followed by classes to build artistic skills in drawing, painting, color theory and composition.

Using the Port as inspiration, participants will create original drawings and paintings that will be exhibited at a public gallery in August. A panel of judges will recognize outstanding artwork with cash prizes during the exhibition’s opening reception.

Registration is open for two one-week sessions, with space available on a first-come, first-served basis. The program is only available to students who have just completed the fifth grade or will be entering the fifth grade this fall.

“Introducing students to the Port at an early age helps them see it as a source of innovation, careers and community pride as we build the workforce of tomorrow,” Long Beach Harbor Commission President Frank Colonna said in a public statement. “We’re excited to partner with the Arts Council for Long Beach to provide these young artists with a meaningful educational experience while celebrating their creativity.”

Sessions will be held from 2-4 p.m. on the following weekdays:

  • July 13–17 at Silverado Park (1545 W. 31st St.)
  • July 27–31 at Michelle Obama Neighborhood Library (5870 Atlantic Ave.)
