As we hit the halfway point of August and the end of summer draws closer and closer, there are still plenty of things to do around Long Beach.
Residents can cool off and take a summer stroll around Second Street Wednesday, enjoy live music with sunsets at the Long Beach Museum of Art Thursday and take advantage of back-to-school giveaways happening Saturday and Tuesday.
Celebrate the end of summer with live music throughout the week, at the Bembridge House Friday, at Steelcraft Saturday, at the bandshell Tuesday night or at El Dorado Nature Center Thursday night.
Friday 8/14
Little Creators Craft Night: 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Join Sacred Path Indigenous Wellness Center for Little Creators Craft Night at the Arts Building (236 E. Third St.). Children ages 0-8 and their families can enjoy a fun, family-friendly event of creativity and connection. The project focuses on planter pots and invites the little ones to explore their imagination through art in a welcoming community space. RSVP here. Free.
Music and Moonlight: 6 p.m. Enjoy live music on the porch of the beautiful Historic Bembridge House (953 N. Park Circle) featuring Bread and Butter Band. Guests are invited to bring chairs and snacks. Free.
Ice Cream Social: 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Meet your neighbors during the Alamitos Beach Neighborhood Association Ice Cream Social at Bixby Park Community Center (130 Cherry Ave.). Attendees can get free ice cream, share ideas and meet a representative from Second District Councilmember Cindy Allen’s office as well as an LBPD South Division officer. Free.
Saturday 8/15
Back-to-School Backpack Giveaway: 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. District 8 and Crossroads LB will host their second annual back-to-school giveaway at Scherer Park (Del Amo Boulevard & East 49th St. near the tennis courts). Attendees will receive free food, haircuts and styling and backpacks filled with school supplies. Pre-registering does not guarantee you will receive supplies; it’s on a first-come, first-served basis and the child must be present in order to receive supplies. Free. RSVP here.
Pools of Hope Back-to-School Giveaway: 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Long Beach nonprofit Pools of Hope is hosting its 11th annual back-to-school giveaway at 6801 Long Beach Blvd. Attendees will receive free backpacks, school supplies, and groceries, along with asthma education and screenings, and free swim access for youth ages 5 to 17. Supplies will be given out on a first-come, first-served basis. Free.
Summer celebration at Marina Vista Park: 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Celebrate the reopening of Marista Vista Park (5355 E. Elliot St.) with recreational games, a bounce house, face painting and more. Free.
Member Market & Neighborhood Summer Fest: 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Slow Matter Studio holds its annual Summer Fest neighborhood event at 4th & Termino with small business pop-ups, food and drinks and art shows. From 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., San & Wolves Bakeshop will also host an annual neighborhood summer fest at 4th Street and Termino Avenue with Filipino-owned vendors Karryokah and Tita’s Lumipia. Both events are free.
Summer Block Party: 1:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Bring kids, friends and the whole family to the last block party of the season at Steelcraft (16500 Bellflower Blvd.). Enjoy a day of family fun including Lilo & Stitch characters, hair tinsel, pop-up shows and live music. Free.
Dance Fest: 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Enjoy a wide array of cultural dance performances at Cesar Chavez Park (401 Golden Ave.).
Sunday 8/16
Cars & Coffee: 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. Join fellow car enthusiasts with coffee, breakfast and live music at The Small Cafe (5656 Second St.). DM @thesmallcafe.lb on Instagram to reserve a spot for your vintage car. Free.
Kidical Mass August Bike Ride: 11 a.m. Enjoy a 4.5-mile bike ride and celebrate the Iron Kid award outside Pixie Toys (3914 Atlantic Ave.). The ride leaves at 11 a.m. sharp, and there will be celebratory treats afterwards at Angel Food Donuts provided by Pixie Toys. Free.
Little Library: 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Long Beach Community Library will be at Wrigley Coffee (437 W. Willow St.) with free books for the taking. You can also drop off zine or book donations. Free.
Conscious Cinema — An Encore Social Justice Film Series: 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Black Lives Matter Long Beach brings back Conscious Cinema with a community screening of Ava DuVernay’s “13th” at the Blu Art & Wellness Gallery (580 Pine Ave.). Long Beach Book Club: 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Join Culture Care Collaborative in reading and discussing the short book “Why Misogynists Make Great Informants” at Vine LB (2142 E. Fourth St.). Art activities and snacks are included. Free.
Movie in the Park: 6:30 p.m. Families and friends can gather at Orizaba Park (1435 Orizaba Ave.) to watch the 2025 live-action film “How To Train Your Dragon.” Festivities such as a bouncy house, crafts and free popcorn will start at 6:30 p.m. and the movie will begin at sunset. Free.

Scoops & Supplies Back to School Giveaway: 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Two hundred children will receive backpacks filled with supplies, brand-new shoes, insulated water bottles and books, courtesy of First District Councilmember Mary Zendejas and the Wilmore City Community Association at the Berbridge House (953 N. Park Circle). Ice cream, sweet treats and haircuts will also be given. Summer at the Shell: 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Listen to the live sounds of soul and Motown jams as Stone Soul performs at the bandshell at Recreation Park (4900 E. Seventh St.). Free.
Poke-her Night: 8 p.m. to 2 a.m. This new poker night will take place every Tuesday and is catered to lesbians and queers, either who want to learn poker or already know how to play, at Werk Long Beach (3428 E. Pacific Coast Highway). Pool tables will also be available. Free.

Creative Strategies for Culturally Inclusive Programming: 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. United Cambodian Community will be hosting a free workshop at the Billie Jean King Main Library (200 W. Broadway) that focuses on how to plan and develop culturally inclusive programming year-round, not just on special holidays. Free. RSVP here.
Summer Stroll & Savor Food Fest: 5:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Enjoy a summer stroll on Second Street with food samples, shops and live music. Musical Theatre West will be doing a pop-up performance from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. next door to The Lash Lounge (4805 Second St.). Free.

Long Beach Museum of Art’s Sunsets: The Long Beach Museum of Art welcomes the public for one special summer night and free admission to the newest exhibition, “Positive Fragmentation,” which includes over 180 prints drawn from the Collections of Jordan D. Schnitzer and his Family Foundation. Live music will be performed by Oralia & The Aquadolls and curated by Good Luck Vinyl Club and RVCA. Bark n Brew: 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Dogs and their people are invited to an evening of dog-friendly fun, shopping and making new friends. There will be food for humans and dogs, a caricature artist, a DIY collar bar, frozen dog treats, wellness products and more at Alder & Sage (366 Cherry Ave.). Free.
Summer Concert: 6:30 p.m. The last concert of the El Dorado Nature Center Summer Concert Series will feature the band Sligo Rags. Gates open at 6:30 p.m., and concerts take place from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. Admission is $5 per person at the door (cash, card or SmartPay available). Concertgoers are encouraged to bring an eco-friendly dinner and low chairs.
