LiNKS Sign Language & Interpreting Services and REACH-Reaching Diversity consulting business will conduct a 40-hour workshop for interpreters who work in health care. The five-day training will meet the minimum requirements for interpreters who seek certification as a medical interpreter.
Southern California’s diversity creates the need for individuals who can speak several languages, especially in health care, where patients and medical personnel need interpreters who can orally transfer a message from one spoken language into another. To assure that all patients receive the care they need, receiving services from a certified interpreter is essential.
The workshop will be offered June 9, 10, 23, 24 and 30 from 9am to 5pm at Goodwill SOLAC’s main office at 800 W. Pacific Coast Hwy.
“Hosting this workshop is an extension of our services,” said Chuck Scarpaci, director of LiNKS Sign Language & Interpreting Services. “Interpreting is the conversion of meaning from one language to another language, not necessarily word for word. Words do not have meaning, meaning has words.”
Presented by Rosanna Balistreri, MA, the training will include an introduction to the California Healthcare Interpreting Association’s Standards for Healthcare Interpreters, an overview of ethical principles, standardized interpreting protocols, roles interventions, and an ethical decision-making process is provided. The training also includes interpreting practice and case studies. In addition, medical terminology is woven into practice activities each day of the training.
