Pearl first acquainted himself with learning how to play the guitar in the 1950s; however, his musical journey did not pick up until 1960 at his brother Ed Pearl’s nightclub, the Ash Grove, on Melrose Avenue in L.A. Pearl’s music developed with the teachings and guidance from greats like Hopkins, Lipscomb, MacDowell and Freddie King. Pearl also played duets with John Lee Hooker at Gerde’s Folk City in Greenwich Village.
Around the same time, Pearl began performing guitar solos, both acoustic and electric, as well as with his own Bernie Pearl Blues Band, which has backed the likes of B.B. King, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Willie Dixon, and Big Joe Turner. The Bernie Pearl Blues Band has been in the spotlight at many of Southern California’s best-known musical locations: the House of Blues, California Plaza Presents, the Blue Café, Disney’s California Adventure and the Playboy Pasadena Community Jazz Festival.
Currently, Pearl continues to develop his steel-guitar skills. He is also working on creating a higher profile nationally by bookings at festivals throughout the country.
“[Blues] is simply something that I have a done in the past, continue to do, and look forward to continue doing in the future. I love what I do regardless of the obstacles I encounter,” Pearl said. “I’ve been on what one might call a blues quest.”
The Bernie Pearl Blues Band’s performance will be the first of three summer concerts held this year at Rancho Los Cerritos. Additional concerts will include Cris Barber performing jazz on Sunday, July 22, and Romanza performing a mix of traditional and modern Latin jazz on Sunday, Aug. 26. All concerts begin at 5:30pm.
