“Brian has been involved with several professional baseball organizations in a number of different capacities, giving him varied professional experience that should provide a solid foundation in his work with our Western Region,” Keener said. “Most of his background is in the communications field, which should help him connect with our large number of volunteers in the region.”
The Society of St. Vincent de Paul Council of Los Angeles is a nonprofit, charitable organization that provides one-on-one services for people of all ages, races and religions to help improve their quality of life. Some of the many services provided include home visits to those in need, a camp program, shelters for the homeless, a new family housing complex, counseling, food distribution and a thrift store operation to help support the above mentioned programs.
Pickering was responsible for the nonprofit’s newsletters and annual reports, organizing and coordinating press conferences, and producing press releases while developing and implementing special events.
Pickering graduated from Cal Poly Pomona with a degree in communications and has served in a number of different capacities for the Los Angeles Dodgers Public Relations Department. He has contributed stories for Dodgers magazine in addition to being a research and statistics coordinator for the Dodgers’ English and Spanish radio and television teams. He has also worked two World Baseball Classics and served in administrative positions with the Fresno and Bakersfield minor league teams in the Single-A California League.
In his new position with Little League, Pickering will assist Region Director Jim Gerstenslager and Assistant Director Dave Bonham with the operation of the region headquarters. Some of those duties will include working with leagues throughout the region to enhance operations, developing and implementing training programs and the operation of tournaments, including the annual West Region Little League Softball Tournament and the Northwest and West Region Little League Baseball Tournaments.
“I am excited to be involved in Little League,” Pickering said. “To be part of an organization that is well respected and helps shape the lives and character of today’s young people is very rewarding. Little League may be a sport, but it also helps teach boys and girls positive skills that will carry them through adulthood.”
Pickering and his wife, Jae, reside in San Bernardino and have four children.
The Little League Western Region Headquarters Complex includes Al Houghton Stadium, a Little League Division-size field that is used for the regional tournaments, one regulation-size baseball field and a batting cage. The Complex also includes a swimming pool, dormitories, cafeteria and administration building. The Western Region Headquarters serves 11 states (Alaska, Arizona, California, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, Washington and Wyoming) and 568,605 Little League players who comprised 37,907 teams in 2011.
