Local events and happenings for the coming week

Assembly member hosts Scam Stoppers
Learn from a panel of experts what you can do to stop scam artists in their tracks. Come discuss legislation pertaining to identity theft and scams in such areas as insurance, telemarketing, consumer products and home improvements. Presented by California Assembly Member Betty Karnette, the program will take place from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 25 inside the Signal Hill City Hall Council Chamber, located at 2175 Cherry Avenue.

LB Black Chamber of Commerce Meeting
The Long Beach Black Chamber of Commerce is having its monthly meeting Friday, Jan. 25 at 6 p.m. The meeting is open to the public and will take place in their office, located at 121 Linden Avenue in Long Beach. For more information, call (562) 436-8221.

Volunteer Coffee Event & Rancho Tour
Rancho Los Cerritos is hosting two special events this weekend. On Saturday, Jan. 26 from 10 a.m. to noon, prospective volunteers are invited to the Volunteer Coffee event, where they can take a tour of the rancho and learn about the positions available. On Sunday, Jan. 27, the Living History Tours will have visitors touring the 163-year-old house complete with 19th century characters. Teachers Workshop at Aquarium
The Cabrillo Marine Aquarium is hosting a free workshop for teachers grades four to eight Saturday, Jan. 26 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Incorporate the watershed into your curriculum while addressing science and social science standards. Educators will be provided with a resource kit of materials and supplies and will learn about field trip options. Cabrillo Marine Aquarium is located at 3720 Stephen M White Drive in San Pedro. Community Celebration
Join 6th District Councilmember Dee Andrews and the Long Beach Redevelopment Agency as they celebrate the completion of the Martin Luther King Medians Saturday, Jan. 26 from 11 a.m. to noon. The celebration will take place on the corner of PCH and Martin Luther King Avenue and include a dedication ceremony for the new medians and entertainment provided by the music students at Poly High School. Monthly Elks Breakfast
The Bellflower/Long Beach Elks invite the public to their monthly Elks breakfast on Sunday, Jan. 27. Enjoy a selection of scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, potatoes, biscuits with gravy, fruit, waffles, juice and coffee. The breakfast is from 8 a.m. to noon and the cost is $5.50 per person. The Bellflower/Long Beach Elks Lodge #888 is located at 16426 Bellflower Boulevard in Bellflower.

Beer and Politics
On Tuesday, Jan. 29 at 7 p.m., Councilmember Suja Lowenthal of Long Beach’s 2nd District will host Beer and Politics, a monthly series incubated with the Long Beach Junior Chamber. Beer and Politics offers residents an opportunity to engage in a positive political dialog over a pint of beer. Whale Watch
The public is invited to the Aquarium of the Pacific’s educational whale cruise, happening now through the end of May. The ocean adventure will include an educational multimedia presentation by a marine naturalist and various hands-on learning activities for all ages. The cost for the cruise is $39.95 for adults, $28.95 for children ages 3 to 11 and $36.95 for seniors 65 and up. The Aquarium of the Pacific is located at 100 Aquarium Way in Long Beach.
