More Info Linda DeGuire, Professor Emerita of Mathematics at CalState Long Beach, found her professional career threatened 12 years ago because of her increased hearing loss— until she discovered lip reading (or speech reading) classes at the local chapter of the HLAA. DeGuire will discuss it and how it may help persons hard of hearing. DeGuire now facilitates a Wednesday lip reading class at the local chapter, which resumes Aug. 29 from 9:30am to 11:30am. Fluorescent bulbs as well as household and kitchen appliances are not accepted. Funds will benefit the American Legion District 19 Post # 496. The American Legion is a nonprofit organization that supports veterans and their families, and funds college scholarship opportunities.

More Info Long Beach was deemed “Iowa by the Sea” for its many Iowan transplants around the beginning of the 20th century. This annual picnic carries on the legacy. There will be a potluck at noon; after lunch, discussion of the the USS Iowa will follow. Attendees are requested to bring their own dish, utensils, beverages and chairs. The club house does have a few spare picnic tables and chairs. Volunteers are needed and all friends of Iowans are welcome.
