Long Beach Vice Mayor Robert Garcia is asking Long Beach residents to register their cell phones for Reverse 911, the City’s Emergency Notification System.
“The recent minor earthquakes serve as an important reminder to be prepared,” Garcia said. “We need all residents to register for Reverse 911 so that we can contact them in case of a natural disaster or emergency.”
While the City has access to most landlines in the area, it does not have access to cell phones unless they are registered in the Reverse 911 system. Reverse 911 allows the City to contact residents on their cell phones with information in case of an emergency. Since some residents only have cell phones, and an emergency may occur while most are at work, registering cell phones in the Reverse 911 system is extremely important, according to Garcia. “I’ve registered my cell phone, and it only takes two minutes,” he said.
Residents can register for Reverse 911 at http://www.longbeach.gov/R911 .
Garcia is also the chair of the City Council’s Public Safety Committee.
