Local events and happenings for the coming week
Neighborhood Meeting
The California Heights Neighborhood Association will be having their monthly community meeting tonight at 7 p.m. This meeting will discuss how residents can enhance and beautify the exterior of their homes using decorative gates, fences and other structures. The meeting will take place at the Petroleum Club, located at 3636 Linden Avenue in Long Beach.

Whale Watch
The public is invited to the Aquarium of the Pacific’s educational whale cruise, happening now through the end of May. The ocean adventure will include an educational multimedia presentation by a marine naturalist and various hands-on learning activities for all ages. The cost for the cruise is $39.95 for adults, $28.95 for children ages 3 to 11, and $36.95 for seniors 65 and up. The Aquarium of the Pacific is located at 100 Aquarium Way in Long Beach. Coffee With Rae Gabelich
The public is invited to join Councilwoman Rae Gabelich of the 8th district for a cup of coffee and some conversation Saturday, Feb. 9 at 10 a.m. Residents will have the opportunity to voice concerns and give suggestions. Beach Clean-up Anniversary
Long Beach councilmember Suja Lowenthal and Clean Alamitos Beach invite the public to join them to celebrate their first year of their 30-minute beach clean-ups Saturday, Feb. 9 at 11 a.m. on Shoreline Drive. Guests who participate in the clean-up will enjoy free food, prizes and have a chance to win free tickets to the Aquarium of the Pacific. For more information, call (562) 570-6684.

Community Celebration
Join 6th District Councilmember Dee Andrews and the Long Beach Redevelopment Agency as they celebrate the completion of the Martin Luther King Medians Saturday, Feb. 9 from 11 a.m. to noon. The celebration will take place on the corner of PCH and Martin Luther King Avenue and include a dedication ceremony for the new medians with entertainment provided by music students at Poly High School. Father/Daughter Dance
On Sun., Feb. 10, the Bayshore Church in Belmont Shore will host a father/daughter dance from 5p.m. to 7 p.m. The annual event is open to dads and daughters of all ages and costs $25 per couple in advance, $35 at the door and an extra $10 for each additional child. Proceeds benefit the nonprofit Community Action Team (CAT). The Bayshore Church is located 5200 East Nieto Avenue in Long Beach. Disability Presentation
The Disabled Resources Center will have a presentation from Precision Rehabilitation’s Christy Malonzo Wednesday, Feb. 13 at 1:30 p.m. Malonzo will be discussing the services that Precision Rehabilitation offers, such as balance retraining, strength training and home assessments. Docent Training
Starting Wednesday, Feb.13, Rancho Los Cerritos will be having their 10-week tour docent training course. The course covers California and rancho history in depth, as well as adobe architecture, decorative arts, interpretive and public speaking techniques. The course is free with membership to Friends of Los Cerritos and classes take place from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesdays from Feb. 13 to Apr. 16. For reservations, call (562) 570-1755.
