On Saturday, Sept. 15, residential customers of Southern California Edison can bring their old incandescent and halogen lamps to be recycled and receive, new energy-efficient lamps in exchange. Any residential customer of SCE can participate in the lamp exchange, which will take place from 8am to 3pm in the parking lot of Kmart, 2900 Bellflower Blvd.
Customer lamps brought for exchange do need to be in working order, and SCE requests that they leave the old incandescent bulbs in the lamps (they also prefer it if lamp shades are left at home.) SCE customers will have eight styles of new lamps to choose from, depending on the type of lamp and wattage of the existing bulbs (desk and table lamps qualify for one of four desk/table lamp styles; floor lamps qualify for floor, desk, or table lamps; halogen torchieres qualify for all eight lamp selections.)

The goal of the lamp exchange program is to replace old, inefficient lighting fixtures with new Energy Star-rated efficient fixtures. By switching from inefficient incandescent bulbs to compact fluorescent bulbs, people can save up to 75% off their home lighting costs. Many people are unaware that incandescent bulbs are one of the least efficient lighting sources available; 90 percent of the energy used by an incandescent bulb goes toward producing heat, not light.
How to participate
• Participants in the lamp exchange may bring up to 10 working lamps to exchange and are limited to a total of 10 lamps per household.
• Provide a California Driver’s license or an SCE residential bill to prove eligibility
• Quantities are first-come, first-served and while supplies last.
• Leave lamp shades at home
• Do leave the old incandescent bulbs in the lamp sockets
