California Coastal Cleanup Day is the largest volunteer event in the state of California, according to the California Coastal Commission. Every year on the third Saturday in September, tens of thousands of people head out to beaches, lakes and inland waterways to clean up tons of trash.
“The California Coastal Cleanup Day is a fun and easy way to help keep Long Beach clean,” said Mayor Bob Foster.
El Dorado Nature Center staff and volunteers are organizing the Long Beach event to give residents an opportunity to take an active role in improving the health of our local beaches and waterways.
To participate, those interested should arrive at one of the six clean-up sites on Saturday, Sept. 15 between 9am and noon and sign a liability form. Participants under age 18 must have a parent or guardian’s signature. Forms will be available at each cleanup site and online at longbeach.gov/naturecenter .
Long Beach cleanup sites
• Alamitos Beach, Ocean Boulevard at Alamitos Avenue
• Alamitos Bay Marina, 255 N. Marina Dr.
• Belmont Plaza Pool, 4000 E. Olympic Plaza
• Bluff Park, Ocean Boulevard at Coronado Avenue
• Mother’s Beach, East Appian Way under the 2nd Street bridge
• Pierpoint Landing, 200 Aquarium Way
Volunteers should bring sun protection, shoes and drinking water, and they are encouraged to:
• Reduce the supplies used and trash created by bringing their own supplies.
• Reuse by providing a reusable bag or bucket and an old pair of gardening or work gloves to pick up trash. Children can bring their sand pails and shovels to help them clean.
• Repurpose by creating their your own trash-collecting device by creatively using household items. Cut the top off a milk jug, carton, or cleaning bottle to use as a container to collect trash. Any container provided means one less plastic bag.
