Eye on Design is a public art education program that derived from the Arts Council’s unique relationship as an affiliate member to the Smithsonian Institution. The program’s mission is to educate third-grade students on their community, public art appreciation and civic engagement through the public art process. Every year Eye on Design works with a community partner to build a curriculum which informs students on Long Beach’s history and how the city has grown by the establishment of each particular community partner.
For the 2011-2012 school year, Eye on Design partnered with the Port of Long Beach to give third-graders from International, Garfield, and Lafayette elementary schools the opportunity to tour the Port and learn how its daily operations affect the community. Students then went back into the classroom and designed and created a mosaic based on what they learned from the tour.
The mosaic presentation was the kick-off event for Long Beach Arts Month, an annual program that renews awareness and support for local arts. To learn more about Long Beach Arts Month, visit longbeachartsmonth.org .
