HISTORY ON THE HILL

The CHALLENGES OF THE HEARING IMPAIRED
The Long Beach/Lakewood Chapter of the Hearing Loss Association is having its monthly meeting tonight at 6:30 p.m. with speaker Geoffrey Gaertner of the Disabled Resources Center, Inc. speaking about the challenges of hearing loss. The meeting will take place at the Weingart Senior Center at 5220 Olivia Avenue in Lakewood. For more information, call (562) 433-6509.

A FUNDRAISING FIESTA
St. Barnabas Parish School is hosting its annual spring fundraiser at the Airport Marriott Hotel Saturday, April 12. The fiesta-themed event will include dinner, dancing, both a silent and live auction, and a teenaged mariachi band who recently performed for Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and regularly perform at Olvera Street in downtown L.A. Tickets are $75 each and each ticket enters the holder into a drawing to win a free night at the Airport Marriot Hotel. For more information, call (562) 424-7476.

DROP IN, SIT DOWN….AND WIN A PIE!
Signal Hill residents are invited to participate in the Housing Subcommittee Workshop, an informal “drop in” opportunity to meet city officials and planning staff to discuss the housing element update, housing rehabilitation grants, a housing site evaluation and the 2010 U.S. Census. Feel free to drop in between 6:30 p.m. and 8 p.m. and participate in one of the roundtables for a chance to win one of six fresh baked pies. Miller Children’s Hospital is offering its Preparation for Childbirth/Lamaze class from 6:30 p.m.-9 p.m. Tuesdays, April 15 and 29 and May 6 and 13, as well as Thursdays, April 10 and 17 and May 1, 8 and 15. The Disabled Resources Center will host a presentation by Suzanne Schwartz, a social worker at Long Beach Community Hospital, about music appreciation. BECOME A MAD SCIENTIST
The Signal Hill Park Community Center invites children and adults of all ages to its library’s youth program “Mad Science,” a free, highly interactive show that includes fascinating science demonstrations with air pressure, fire, bubbling, potions, and more. READ, THEN REDE, REVOLUTIONARY ROAD
The Bixby Knolls Literary Society is gearing up for its next meeting to discuss Revolutionary Road by Richard Yates on Wednesday, April 16 at 7 p.m. at the Dana Branch Public Library, 3680 Atlantic Avenue. From the moment of its publication in 1961, Revolutionary Road was hailed as a masterpiece of realistic fiction and as the most evocative portrayal of the opulent desolation of the American suburbs. PEER COUNSELING TRAINING
The Disabled Resources Center will have a peer counseling training beginning Tuesday, April 22 from 1:30 p.m.-3 p.m., meeting weekly for eight weeks.
