The First Fridays Art Walk in Bixby Knolls on March 7 will feature king cake, beads and masks as the event celebrates Mardi Gras.
King and queen Jahaziel and Brina Romero and the Bayou Brass Band will lead a parade from San Antonio Avenue to Bixby Road. Those interested in participating in the parade should meet at the Expo Arts Center, 4321 Atlantic Ave. at 6:30pm— fun fashions encouraged.
The newest addition to First Fridays, in conjunction with the Arts Council of Long Beach, ARTiculate, a monthly art talk, will take place at Elise’s Tea Room featuring Long Beach artist Carole Frances Lung. Through her alter ego, Frau Fiber, Lung utilizes a hybrid of playful activism, cultural criticism, research and spirited crafting of one-of-a-kind garment-production performances. She investigates the human cost of mass production and consumption, addressing issues of value and time through the thoroughly hand-made construction and salvaging of garments.
Her performances have been exhibited at Jane Addams Hull House Museum, Craft and Folk Art Museum, Museum of Contemporary Craft Portland, Sullivan Galleries, SAIC, Chicago IL, Ben Maltz Gallery, OTIS College of Art and Design, LA CA, Catherine Smith Gallery, Appalachian State University Boone NC and the Ghetto Biennale Port Au Prince Haiti. Publications include: Chicago Arts News, American Craft Council: Shaping the Future of Craft, Art in America and Art Papers.
Long Beach Arts Collective will present B.Y.O.B. (Bring Your Own Beamer) from 6:30pm to 9:30pm at the Expo Arts Center. The exhibit is an exploration of the medium of projection and will feature artists from the local area.
Seventh District Councilmember James Johnson’s “First Books at First Fridays” at the Dana Branch Library will begin at 5:30pm.
Eigth District Councilmember Al Austin’s “Council on Your Corner” will be set up at Atlantic Avenue and Carson Street to meet and greet attendees.
The Big Red Bus will be available to transport attendees from venue to venue via designated stops at the participating businesses.
