Letter to the Editor: Righting the ‘Right?’

The Superior Court this week agreed that the City of Signal Hill is trying to mislead Signal Hill residents on the facts of the Taxpayer’s Right to Know and Vote citizens’ initiative. The City used false information in the impartial analysis produced by the city attorney. The impartial analysis will appear on the sample ballot being prepared for the June 3, 2014 election.
The city attorney wrote an analysis designed to bias the voter to vote against the Taxpayer’s Right to Know and Vote initiative, and the Court ordered that the analysis be revised.
On top of that, the same information that the Court said was misleading and biased is being used by the City in its printed material currently being distributed.
The Court also confirmed that the so-called “independent consultant fiscal report” on the Taxpayer’s initiative is irrelevant. For some time now, initiative supporters have pointed out that the report was made to scare people, not inform them.
The City Council unanimously opposes the initiative. That is their right. But, they do not have the right to use false information to do it. I hope that the Council and city officials act to correct the reprehensible path they are on.
