Sixth District Councilmember Dee Andrews and the Department of Parks, Recreation & Marine are making improvements to Veterans Park, 101 East 28th St., this month, according to Andrews’s office.
Work on the 14.32 acres of land will include: resurfacing of two basketball half-courts, resurfacing of one hockey court, resurfacing of two tennis courts with one being converted into a futsol court, and the replacing and upgrading of 54 windows in the recreation center.
Funding for the improvements came from Andrews’s one-time Upland Oil funds, according to his office.
“It is great to see one of our city’s parks getting much needed renovations,” Andrews said. “Each day, I see hundreds of people enjoying this park, and I know they will be enjoying it even more now.”
The current site between 28th and Spring Street was acquired as a park and named Veterans Memorial Park on August 19, 1952. On April 12, 1956, a development plan was approved by the City Council. The park was completed in April 1958 with the dedication of the community recreation center, which contains a large multi-purpose room with a raised stage and hardwood floors, a kitchen and two classrooms.
Other park improvements include a lighted softball field, a lighted baseball field, a lighted soccer field, four basketball courts, two tennis courts, a volleyball court, a group picnic area, a freestanding restroom and a playground for pre-school and school-aged children.
