Today is the kick-off day for our new weekly Thinking Green feature. With all the talk about global warming, recycling, water conservation and solar power, we found it necessary to do our part to educate ourselves and our readers on the importance of being environmentally responsible.
I don’t plan to use this weekly feature as a way to jump up on my soapbox and preach (in some instances – to the choir) about “going green.” I don’t have all the answers. I too am in the learning mode. I recycle, have a back yard of artificial turf, use my own fabric bags at the grocery store, participated in the lamp exchange, etc. But I don’t drive a hybrid car, own solar panels, or walk to work.
Those who don’t care about the environment certainly care about their bankbooks. With gas and food prices so high, tightening our belts is a must. We can save money by turning off unneeded electricity, planting drought-resistant landscaping and cutting out unnecessary car trips.
I believe the term “thinking green” has a double meaning – “green” as in greenbacks ($$) and “green” as in environment. With a little work we can save both.
Our goal with this new section is to gather information and share as much editorially as we can and to also introduce our readers to businesses who promote themselves as being green friendly.
We understand that global warming is a controversial issue. Some believe it – some don’t. We will provide information on a basic level and do not plan to get too scientific. Those who want information on a deeper level will be provided with Web sites and addresses of where such material can be obtained. We also plan to bring you advertising for area companies who have products or services that can be categorized as green friendly. If you have any ideas or suggestions on our “Thinking Green” section please call, write or stop by. We want to hear from you. Have a tip for our readers? Send it in.
Do let us know what we can do for you — as it says on the front page of each issue — we are:
