Approximately 2,000 people are expected to participate in the seventh annual Wrigley River Run/Walk 5K, 10K, and 15K, to be held on Saturday, June 7, according to the Long Beach Neighborhood Foundation (LBNF), which sponsors the event.
The first race will begin at 7:30am. The race course is located in Long Beach’s historic Wrigley neighborhood, and portions of the course will follow the Los Angeles River Trail. There will be musical entertainment at multiple spots along the scenic course.
A race for children ages 10 and under— the River Run Tadpole Trot— will be offered in conjunction with the event at 9:30am. Unlike other running events, this race is coordinated entirely by volunteers, and all race proceeds are donated to programs that benefit at-risk youth in Long Beach and to the schools and groups that participate and volunteer, according to the LBNF.
Those interested in participating in the event can register at wrigleyriverrun.com or in person on Friday, June 6, from 5pm to 8pm in the parking lot of Holy Innocents Parish, 2500 Pacific Ave. (at the corner of Pacific Avenue and Willow Street) or on Saturday, June 7 starting at 6am at the same location. This location is also the start/finish line for the event.
“The support for this event grows every year with people from all over not just Long Beach but all of Southern California coming together to get outside with their family, friends, and neighbors, get some exercise, have some fun, and support youth programs in our city,” said race organizer Gavin McKiernan.
A finish-line festival with live music, prizes and awards, including free shoes to the race winners donated by Legacy Running Store, will take place after the race. All 5K, 10K and 15k participants will receive goodie bags and commemorative T-shirts. All children in the Tadpole Trot will get a medal and a free pass to the Aquarium of the Pacific.
The Wrigley River Run is also sponsored by DBL Logistics, United Agencies Insurance, Buono’s Pizzeria, Toyota, A Running Experience Club, AA Graphics, Altus Realty and other local businesses and groups.
