HOLIDAY SWITCHEROO
The Wrigley Area Neighborhood Alliance (WANA) meeting scheduled for tonight has been postponed to Thursday, July 10 due to the July 4 holiday. Instead the public is invited Wednesday, July 2 at 6 p.m. to Los Cerritos Park for a group picnic and to listen to the Long Beach Municipal Band concert celebrating the Fourth of July. ANXIOUS, DEPRESSED OR STRESSED?
Recovery International provides free tools and practice in changing thinking habits so individuals can gain personal control over distressing emotions and improve general well-being. This worldwide non-profit organization, founded in 1937, holds weekly meetings every Saturday at 1 p.m. at Kaiser Hospital Conference Center on Normandie (one block south of PCH). PEER PREP
The Disabled Resources Center will start a peer counseling training on July 8 at 1:30 p.m. at the center, 2750 E. Spring Street, Suite 100. MASTER THE AGES
The Bixby Knolls Literary Society will be reading Philip Roth’s masterpiece American Pastoral as its July selection. The special guest speaker for the July Society meeting will be John Romano, who has written for movies and television for most of his career, from Hill Street Blues through Intolerable Cruelty to the forthcoming Nights in Rodanthe. Romano was also an assistant professor of English at Columbia University, a book reviewer for the New York Times, and author of a book on Charles Dickens entitled Dickens and Reality. The next meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, July 9 at 7 p.m. at the Richard Goad Theatre, 4250 Atlantic Avenue. Call (562) 595-0081 for more info.
MEET THE MAYOR
Long Beach Mayor Bob Foster will be the special guest speaker at the joint public meeting hosted by the Wrigley Area Neighborhood Alliance (WANA) and the West Long Beach Association. Free admission, refreshments, parking and childcare are available. The mayor will speak on issues that are of particular concern to Westside neighborhoods. The meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Thursday, July 10 at Jackie Robinson Academy, 2750 Pine Avenue. The meeting room is located on 28th Street across from Veterans Park.
