I have so many different things to share with you that the only way I can do so is to just randomly string them together — enjoy!
My husband Steve is a member of the Bellflower / Long Beach Elks Lodge #888 and serves on the Americanism Committee. As such, one of his duties is to assist with the occasional flag retirement service. The next service will take place Wednesday, July 16 where tattered and torn flags are gathered to be disposed of in a proper and dignified manner. Anyone who has an old flag that should be deemed unserviceable is welcome to bring it to our office at the Signal Tribune, 2669 Myrtle Ave., Suite 111, Signal Hill, no later than 4 p.m. on Tuesday, July 15. These flags will be added to those collected by the Americanism Committee at the Elks Lodge and will be disposed of in a respectful fashion. For details, call Steve at the Signal Tribune office (562) 427-8678.

Feeling lucky? The Signal Hill Chamber of Commerce, in partnership with Howard’s Appliance and Big Screen Superstore, is sponsoring an opportunity drawing to be held Friday, July 18 at the Chamber’s 6th Annual Golf Tournament Awards Banquet luncheon at Skylinks Golf Course in Long Beach.
Only 250 tickets will be available for sale — the cost is $25 each, with the prize being a 42-inch LCD flat screen HDTV and a Blu-Ray disc player. The winner need not be present at the drawing.
Tickets may be purchased from Chamber board members and golf tournament committee members. The list of names is available at www.signalhillgolf.com or at www.signalhillchamber.com.

Most of us are feeling the effects of the high prices of gas and other everyday living expenses. Here’s a tip that may help you save a buck or two. My friend and coworker Marie recently called her car insurance agent to update the information in her file. It looks as if, by doing so, she has hit a bit of a jackpot. Marie’s husband Gary used to drive quite a distance roundtrip from home to work. However, with him now working a stone’s throw from their residence, they will be saving $400 a year on their car insurance premiums. Sound too good to be true? I thought so too. After hearing about Marie’s insurance bonanza, I immediately called my insurance agent to see if we would qualify for such a break. Sure enough, with Steve retired and my working only a mile from home, we were able to lower our approximated annual mileage from 12,000 miles each to just 5,000 miles for me and 7,500 for Steve — saving us a grand total of $340 a year. Call your agent — you just may create your own stimulus package!
