Last Saturday’s Back-to-School Summer Blast, co-sponsored by 8th District Long Beach Councilmember Al Austin and the Andy Street Community Foundation, was attended by hundreds of families from around Long Beach, according to Heather Morrison, communications deputy with the 8th District Council office. Kids played in the mobile game lounge and bounce houses while parents were able to obtain free health screenings from St. Mary Medical Center and gather information on community resources. The Long Beach Police Officers Association provided free hot dogs for the crowd. “I am proud to have been involved with the Back-to-School Summer Blast for the last four years,” Austin said. “Helping kids prepare for the new school year by providing backpacks and school supplies is a true pleasure.” Councilmember Austin, along with new Long Beach Unified School Board member, Megan Kerr, and several other community partners, will be holding another back-to-school event on Saturday, Sept. 6 from 10am to 2pm at Scherer Park, 4600 Long Beach Blvd. For more information, call the 8th District Council office at (562) 570-6685.
