Letter to the Editor: A phone call away

[Last week],the world lost one of its biggest voices in comedy— Robin Williams. Unbeknownst to the public, he was privately battling the demons of depression, and coupled with other struggles, Robin ended his life. Don’t let this tragedy overshadow the lifetime of humor, laughs, and goodwill that Robin gave us through his movies and stand-up comedy.

If you or someone you know is having thoughts of suicide, do not be ashamed to talk to someone. Depression is an illness— a sickness that can be treated. You may feel as if you are out of options, but there are people who care and are ready to help.

The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 800-273-TALK (8255) is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week and will connect you to a trained crisis counselor. Sometimes, just having a person to talk to and give advice can save a life.

For more resources and facts about suicide, and to learn how to support others who may be suffering from extreme forms of depression, I encourage you to please visit suicidepreventable.org .
